winLAME is intended to extract tracks from discs and convert between audio formats. In this regard, it allows converting between a long list of audio formats, thanks to its support of various encoders, including LAME MP3, Opus, Ogg Orbis, LibSndFile, Windows Media Audio, and ACC Audio File.
The program supports two different interface modes: Classic and Modern. If you are not very experienced in these matters, my advice is to use the Classic mode, by which a wizard takes you through all the steps of the desired operation. Unfortunately, some of the text captions are not well formatted, which gives the program an unfinished look.
When ripping an audio CD, it is a great advantage that it can obtain data about the album and the tracks it contains from an Internet music database (freedb.org). Likewise, it is possible to enter information manually. Moreover, you can create a naming pattern for the resulting files.
If you are converting audio files to a different format, it is good that the tool can process files in batches. Similarly, there are also conversion profiles that allow you to choose a given output quality profile, according to your needs and available storage space. Other decisions include deleting the source files and creating an output playlist.
All in all, winLAME is a very light and simple-to-use program that can help you perform some of the most frequent tasks related with audio. Fortunately, it is opensource and will cost you nothing.
